SUTRIM SUSP

ACTIVE-INGREDIENT OF SUTRIM 

Each Teaspoonful 5 ml contains: Sulphamethoxazole 200 mg. Trimethoprime 40 mg.

INDICATION OF SUTRIM 

Sutrim is indicated in the treatment of the following conditionds: – Urinary tract infections due to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species, Morganella morganii, Proteus mirabilis & Proteus vulgaris. – Acute otitis media due to susceptible strains of streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. – Acute excerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults due to susceptible strains of streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. – Traveler’s diarrhea in adults due to susceptible strains of entertoxigenic Escherichia coli. – Enteritis caused by susceptible strains of Shigella flexneri & Shigella sonnei.

DOSAGE OF SUTRIM

The recommended dose is : –

1- Urinary tract infections & shigellosis in adults and pediatric patients and acute otitis media in pediatric patients: – Adults: two sutrim tablets or four teaspoonfuls (20 ml) of sutrim suspension every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days and for 5 days in treatment of shigellosis. – Pediatric patients : 8 mg/kg trimethoprim and 40 mg/kg sulphamethoxazole per 24 hours, given in two divided doses every 12 hours for 10 days and for 5 days in the treatment of shigilosis. – For patients with impaired renal function; Dose depends on the creatinine clearance as follows: – Above 30 use standard regimen. – 15-30 1/2 the usual regimen. – below 15 use is not recommended. 2- Acute excerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults: – Two Sutrim tablets or four teaspoonfuls (20 ml) of Sutrim suspension every 12 hours for 14 days. 3- Traveler’s diarrhea in adults: – Two Sutrim tablets or four teaspoonfuls (20 ml) of Sutrim suspension every 12 hours for 5 days.

OVER-DOSAGE OF SUTRIM 

Signs & symptoms of overdosage reported with sulfonamide & trimethoprim include anorexia, colic, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, unconsciousness, bone marrow depression. – General principles of treatment include the institution of gastric lavage or emesis, forcing oral fluids & the administration of intravenous fluids if urine output is low & renal function is normal.

CONTRA-INDICATION OF SUTRIM 

Sutrim is contraindicated in : 1) Patients with a known hypersensitivity to trimthoprim or sulfonamides. 2) Patients with megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. 3) Pediatric patients less than 2 months of age.

STORAGE OF SUTRIM 

Store in a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Protect from light.
